Setting Up Alpaca

Last updated: 2026-10-31

Setting up Alpaca takes a few minutes. This guide walks you through every screen you'll see the first time you open the app, so you know what to expect at each step.

Before you begin, make sure the iPhone or iPad runs iOS or iPadOS 17 or later, and that you have downloaded Alpaca from the App Store.

Setup, screen by screen

1

Welcome screens

Open Alpaca. The first two screens, Keep Your Family Safe Online and Keep Your Family's Browsing Private, give a short overview of what Alpaca does. Tap Continue on each.

2

Sign in or create your account

Alpaca needs an account. If you already have one — for example from Alpaca on another device — use Welcome back to sign in with your email and password, or tap Sign in with passkey. New to Alpaca? Use Create your account: enter your email address and choose a password of at least 8 characters. Your region is filled in for you.

3

Check your inbox

Alpaca sends a 6-digit code to your email address. Enter it on the Check your inbox screen to confirm the address is yours.

4

Your device is activated

You'll briefly see Setting up your device…, followed by Device activated. There's nothing to do here — Alpaca is getting the iPhone or iPad ready.

5

Choose Your Protection

Pick a preset — a ready-made starting point for what Alpaca helps filter. Standard is marked Recommended and suits most families. You can change the preset, or adjust individual categories, at any time. Using Alpaca explains the presets.

6

Start your free trial

If your account doesn't have a subscription yet, Alpaca shows the subscription screen. Choose a plan to start the 7-day free trial. If you already subscribed on another iPhone or iPad, tap Restore Purchases, or tap Have an invite code? if you were given one. See Subscription for details.

7

One permission to set up

Alpaca explains the one permission it needs. Tap Continue.

8

Allow the VPN configuration

iOS now shows the message Alpaca Would Like to Add VPN Configurations. Tap Allow. iOS may ask for the device passcode to confirm. This is the step that lets Alpaca help filter content on the device — what it means is explained below.

9

Choose Your Interface

Choose Basic for a few clear switches covering the most important categories — a good choice for most parents — or Expert to see every category, grouped, plus the presets. You can change this anytime in Settings.

That's it. The status at the top of the app shows Family Protected when Alpaca is filtering, and a small VPN badge appears in the iPhone or iPad status bar.

What does "Add VPN Configurations" mean?

The word "VPN" can sound worrying, so here is what it means for Alpaca.

To help filter content in every app, Alpaca uses a VPN configuration — but only locally, on the iPhone or iPad itself, and only to filter. It does not send your family's internet traffic to a remote server.

When an app or website looks up an address, Alpaca checks it on the device against its filter lists. A filtered lookup never leaves the device. Everything else carries on as normal.

In iOS Settings › General › VPN & Device Management › VPN, you'll see Alpaca listed as Alpaca DNS. That's the configuration you just allowed. Use the switch in the Alpaca app to turn protection on and off, rather than changing it in iOS Settings.

If the permission didn't work

  • You tapped "Don't Allow" — no problem. Open Alpaca and tap the protection switch again; iOS will ask once more.
  • The permission message never appeared — Screen Time may be blocking VPN changes. See Troubleshooting.
